Qualifications and Professional Career

• Holds a degree in Electronics Engineering, by Lisbon's Technical University (IST), 1970

• From 1970 to 1975 worked at the Laboratório de Física e Engenharia Nucleares (Nuclear Physics Laboratory) in the Group of Experimental Nuclear Physics and later Theoretical Nuclear Physics

• In 1975 started to work for the Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil (LNEC) (National Laboratory for Civil Engineering- state owned research institution), at the Centro de Informática (CI) (Computer Science Dpt)

• In 1981 became Auxiliary Research Officer (Investigador Auxiliar) in Computer Science after submitting and defending a thesis on computer science

• In 1985 was promoted to Associate Research Officer (Investigador Principal).

• In 1992 became Principal Research Officer (Investigador Coordenador) after submitting and defending a research programme

• From 1987-1997 was responsible, at LNEC/CI, for the Database and Applications Group

• From 1993-1998 was also Director and later Chairman of the Board of Directors of LNEC Informática SA, a private information technology company where LNEC was the main shareholder

• From 1998-2001 was Head of the Computer Dpt and Information Systems at DGTT (Portuguese National Agency for Land Transportation)

• Invited Full Professor, at the University of Évora, Computer Science Dpt, since 1998

• From March 2001 to June 2003 held the position of Head of the Information Systems Dpt at the Instituto das Estradas de Portugal (Portuguese Road Authority)

• From July 2004 to March 2005 was Director of the IT Dpt of The Institute of Informatics

• In March 2005 become Coordinator, at LNEC, of a Project to establish a new IT Centre

• From February 2006 to February 2012 was Director of the Information Technology Research Centre (CITI) at the University of Évora

• From September 2007 to February 2012 was Head of the Information Techonology Department (CTI) of LNEC
